I don’t want Betty to be made likable. No part of me clamors for some past trauma to be sloppily revealed to excuse the person that Betty became, as happens all too often in fictional works featuring a woman whose sharp edges are unappealing. I have no qualms with thorny. There is endless room in my heart for female characters who appear to be missing the warmth, the softness the world we live in expects them to have.
